Elijah sprinted through the gap that opened onto the main street opposite where they’d seen Martha Bowie beckoning to them a week before, then ran toward the center of town, keeping himself close to cover as much as possible.

Becky had fallen behind, but was shadowing his moves, obviously aware of how serious the situation was. As they ran, they heard more shots from ahead and now answering rounds, though they were fewer and, as far as Elijah could tell, of lower caliber.

Likely revolvers and handguns versus automatic weapons. Bows and arrows against the lightning.

He stopped outside an abandoned tire shop, hiding in the shelter of its rusty iron side, just inside the entrance. Hands on his knees, he tried desperately to suppress a cough, cursing again at his old twenty a day habit. He’d stopped smoking entirely for some years, but the nicotine demon had crept up on him, and then the end of the world had happened…

"What … are we going to do?" Becky said, finally catching up with him and sounding almost as out of breath as he was.

Wade waved his Colt Government vaguely along main street while he recovered. "Two … trucks. Look as though they’re … outside Josie’s … parallel with road … gunmen in between."

"Outside Josie’s? So, outside the jail, too?"

Wade nodded. "Sounds like Drew’s inside, and someone’s at Josie’s."

"How do you know?"

"Because if not, they’d be inside, and not shooting at it."

Becky nodded. Then she froze. "The shooting’s stopped."

"Yeah." In the distance, a voice could be heard, though he couldn’t make out what it was saying.

As he scampered along the side of the road, passing ranch houses with dark windows, a northerly breeze chilling his lips, he heard another voice. Deep, angry and defiant. Desmond. So, he was at Josie’s, and the attackers clearly weren’t inside.

As the highway rose toward the intersection, he gestured for Becky to follow him around the back of the little gas station, slowing his pace, eyes alert for trouble.

Then he put his hand up, finger to his lips. Two men in hoodies and baseball caps stood at the back entrance to Josie’s, each holding an automatic rifle.

Something or someone lay slumped on the ground just outside the closed door. No way in for Wade.

He gestured to Becky, sending her back the way she’d come, and they hid in the gloom beside the closed thrift store next to Josie’s.

Exactly as he’d seen from farther along the highway, there were two pickup trucks, parked parallel to each other and the sidewalk. Under the cover between them, he could see at least six or seven gun barrels, half pointing into Josie’s and the other half trained on the sheriff’s office. He could see no sign of Drew or Kramer, but they had to be there, or the bandits would have taken the building by now.

He saw all of this in a fraction of a second. Then he saw Reese.

The sergeant stood on the bed of the pickup, hands held behind his back, staring at the sky as a taller, wider figure held a handgun to the side of his head.
